Webinar recap | Skin and mind health from the psycho-biological perspective

Medcan dermatologist and psychologist discuss integrative approaches to skin conditions affected by stress

Woman gardening

Traditionally, medical skin care has been viewed and treated from the biological perspective. In this webinar broadcast on May 30, 2018, Medcan panelists Dr. Kristy Bailey, a double board-certified dermatologist in Canada and the U.S., and Dr. Ricardo Flamenbaum, a clinical and rehabilitation psychologist and CACBT-certified cognitive behavioural therapist, explored preventive measures and treatment options to skin health from a psycho-biological perspective.

Drs. Bailey and Flamenbaum discussed how medical dermatology and psychology overlap, in what is sometimes referred to as psycho-dermatology. Here’s what we covered:

  • Prevalence and types of skin disorders impacted by stress with a focus on psoriasis, eczema, acne and pruritus (itching)
  • What is the link between stress and skin health: when is stress helpful? when is stress harmful?
  • 3 ways psychology interacts with skin health
  • Self-care solutions and medical strategies

You can watch the entire webinar below.  Please note, a section (8:52 to 16:52) was re-recorded due to technical difficulties during the original recording.
