Dry age-related macular degeneration (dry AMD) is the #1 cause of adult blindness, affecting 2.5 million Canadians. Adults over the age of 50 are at greater risk for developing this condition.  

Living with dry AMD can be frustrating, especially when changes in vision begin to affect daily activities like reading, recognizing faces, or seeing clearly in low-light environments.

As part of our commitment to delivering the latest in clinical innovation, Medcan is proud to offer MacuMira, the first and only non-invasive microcurrent treatment approved by Health Canada to improve visual function in patients with dry AMD.

When you choose Medcan as your MacuMira provider, you receive the support of an expert optometry team to administer the treatments and guide you through the process, starting with a complimentary consultation to ensure MacuMira is right for you. You do not need to be a Medcan member to receive this treatment.

The MacuMira device delivers a gentle, pain-free microcurrent through closed eyelids during in-clinic treatment sessions. Under the direction of a Medcan optometrist in our downtown Toronto location, clients relax in a comfortable chair while wearing the MacuMira headset – no injections, surgery, or downtime required.

MacuMira is designed to support the health and function of retinal cells, including cellular and mitochondrial activity, which are affected in dry AMD. It is intended to be used alongside existing dry AMD management, not as a replacement for regular monitoring, nutritional supplementation, or lifestyle recommendations. The treatment includes:

An initial loading phase of four 32-minute treatments is completed within a 10-day period to provide optimal treatment onboarding. A dedicated coordinator schedules and manages all loading phase appointments for ease and convenience, and a Medcan optometrist guides the treatments. The full appointment time is approximately 45 minutes.

The initial loading phase is followed by a maintenance schedule of one 32-minute treatment every three months, or as recommended by the treating Medcan optometrist.

The process includes ongoing monitoring of visual outcomes through visual acuity and contrast sensitivity testing before each MacuMira treatment. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging is completed upon the fourth loading phase appointment, and again throughout the maintenance phase as clinically indicated. Client-reported changes in day-to-day visual function are also assessed on an ongoing basis.

All loading phase and maintenance appointments are administered by Medcan’s optometry team, with optometrist oversight, and are completed in our state-of-the-art Toronto location, with access to curated refreshments and a hospitality-focused environment.  

In a controlled clinical study, 100% of MacuMira patients showed improved vision, with 48% of patients showing an improvement of 10+ letters in ETDRS visual acuity testing.*
