Our Team

Shaun Francis is the Chair and CEO of Medcan, with headquarters in Toronto. Established more than 30 years ago, Medcan is a global leader in assessing their clients’ overall well-being and inspiring them to live well for life. In 2022 Medcan was recognized for overall business performance and sustained growth with the prestigious Canada’s Best Managed Companies designation, presented by Deloitte, CIBC, Salesforce, TMX, and the Globe and Mail. This marks Medcan’s twelfth year on the list and the sixth in the coveted Platinum status. Medcan joins a select group of Canadian companies that are noted for fearless leadership, a culture of teamwork, and a relentless focus on innovation. 

Previously, Shaun was the Executive Chair of New York City’s EHE, the recognized American leader in preventive medicine, and one of the founding employees and Senior Vice President of Strategy and Business Development for Dallas-based Broadlane, Inc., a leading business process outsourcer for more than 900 American hospitals. In 2010, Broadlane was sold to MedAssets for US$850MM. Shaun started his career working for Morgan Stanley’s New York and Toronto investment banking divisions where he managed equity, debt and mergers and acquisitions transactions.

Shaun serves as a Vice Chair of the board of the Fraser Institute and is the Chair and Founder of the True Patriot Love Foundation, Canada’s national foundation for military families and veterans. In 2025 True Patriot Love will bring the Invictus Games back to Canada as a winter/summer hybrid games in Vancouver/Whistler. He previously served on the boards of the Invictus Games Canada, which he collaborated with the Royal Foundation to bring to Toronto in 2017; the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research (CANFAR); Toronto Pearson Airport; Upper Canada College; and he was the Chair of both the Ontario Chapter of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO) and the PC Ontario Fund. 

The Globe and Mail featured Shaun as one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 in 2008, when he was selected by a national panel. In 2010, Canada’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Walter Natynczyk, awarded Shaun the Canadian Forces Medallion for Distinguished Service, the military’s highest recognition for a civilian. In 2011, Shaun was the convocation speaker at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario where he received his Honorary Doctor of Laws from Canada’s Minister of National Defence Peter MacKay.  In 2012 he was selected by Toronto Life as one of Toronto’s top 50 most influential people. In 2013 he was awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal by Senator Linda Frum and the Minister of Veterans Affairs Steven Blaney. In 2014 he was awarded the Veterans Affairs Commendation by Minister Julian Fantino for contributing in an exemplary manner to the care and well-being of veterans. In 2015 he was recognized by Toronto’s Junior Achievement chapter with their Bold Thinkers Inspiring Leaders award for taking risks and challenging convention. In 2016 he was awarded the Meritorious Service Cross by Canada’s Governor General. In 2018 Shaun received the Fraser Institute Founders’ Award which is presented annually to individuals in recognition of their exceptional entrepreneurial achievements, generous philanthropic endeavors and dedication to competitive markets.

Shaun enjoys endurance sports and in 2012 co-led an expedition to Everest Base Camp and the summit of Island Peak, a 6,189-metre Himalayan Peak adjacent to Mount Everest. The expedition featured 12 injured Canadian soldiers raising funds and awareness for the True Patriot Love Foundation and injured veterans. It was the subject of a national prime time documentary named March to the Top airing on the CBC in February 2013. In 2014 Shaun co-led another True Patriot Love Expedition to the Magnetic North Pole, which was also the subject of a national prime time documentary on the History Channel. In 2017 Shaun completed his third True Patriot Love Expedition retracing the route of Canadian explorer George Douglas in the Northwest Territories to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary as a nation. And in 2023 Shaun completed his fourth expedition retracing the training of the joint Canadian and American 1st Special Service Force (The Devil’s Brigade) on the Continental Divide in Montana with special forces veterans from both countries’ militaries. Simon & Schuster published Shaun’s first book, Eat, Move, Think: The Path to a Healthier, Stronger Happier You, which debuted as a national bestseller in 2018.

Shaun earned his MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Science with honors and merit from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland after he received a nomination from President Reagan to attend as a Canadian. While there he also earned a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Canadian Army.

Shaun is married to Stacy Francis and is father to Robert, William, and Christopher. All three sons serve in the US Army, Navy and Marine Corps. 

Born and raised in Canada, he has lived with his family in the United States, the United Kingdom. France, and the Bahamas and has travelled extensively throughout the world.

Chair and Chief Executive Officer

Sherri Look Yan is the Chief Operating Officer at Medcan Health Management Inc. (Medcan). Sherri is a recognized global leader with 25 years of experience, who is a difference maker that excels at the intersection of strategic thought leadership and transformational execution.  

Sherri has a diverse background in Operations, Strategy and Finance, giving her a unique and holistic perspective of business. Sherri’s last role was Senior Vice President of Global Operation at Lifeworks, a global wellbeing company. In this role she led a global team of 2,000 employees and 100,000 network healthcare providers. Prior to Lifeworks, she worked in Strategy at Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and gained global experience in Toronto, New York, United Kingdom, Germany and Australia. Prior to that, she held various Finance key roles such as Finance Planning and Analysis Lead at The Home Depot Canada and Canada’s Finance Business Partner at The Gap Inc.  

Sherri is a Certified Professional Accountant (CPA, CMA). She earned her MBA from Rotman School of Management with honours, and BA in Economics with honours from University of Western Ontario.

Chief Operating Officer

Dr. Peter Nord is the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at Medcan Health Management Inc. (Medcan), with accountability for all clinical activities across the organization. Previously, Dr. Nord was a V.P., CMO at Unity Health Toronto, serving on the executive team, which brought together three large Toronto hospitals under the UHT banner. He was Site Lead for Providence Healthcare, one of the three hospitals.

He currently co-chairs the Rehabilitative Care Alliance, accountable for improving the quality and efficiency of Ontario’s rehabilitation sector. He is also the provincial Physician Champion for improving patient flow in Ontario’s hospitals. 

At Medcan, he carries a Dedicated Care practice, is a Sports Medicine consultant, and offers Annual Health Assessment services to clients. He is also an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, involved with teaching and research activities, and holds a CCFP / FCFP designation and his specialty designation in Sports Medicine.

Dr. Nord trained at McMaster University and the University of Toronto. He went on to hold senior leadership positions in the US with several health systems and was Medical Director for Anthem BlueCross for several years. For two years, he was President of The Flying Hospital, a non-profit international disaster relief organization.

Chief Medical Officer

Neil Mahon is the Chief Information Officer at Medcan Health Management Inc. (Medcan), leading Information Technology, Digital Technology Transformation and Data & Analytics teams along with responsibility for cyber security. His role is focused on establishing Medcan as a leader in digital health services.

Neil is an accomplished IT executive and consultant, and brings a wealth of experience in IT management, digital transformation, and cyber security initiatives from within the healthcare, pharma and manufacturing sectors. He has led overall IT strategic planning and systems implementation for some of the largest healthcare businesses in Canada focused on digital transformation to enhance consumer experiences. 

Prior to joining Medcan, he ran his own consulting business servicing a roster of healthcare and pharma clients and led a cyber remediation program for a major Canadian medical services company. He has also held several progressive positions with a large pharma and chemicals manufacturing business, where he led the IT teams supporting operations throughout EMEA and APAC.

Neil currently sits on the board and is a member of the finance committee of 360 Kids, a non-profit organization focused on servicing homeless and at-risk youth. 

He holds an MSc from the Kemmy Business School at University of Limerick, Ireland.

Jennifer Sernaker-Tytel is the Chief Legal Officer at Medcan Health Management Inc. (Medcan) and oversees a team responsible for the company’s legal function, including from a regulatory perspective. Jennifer is a practical, collaborative and trusted advisor with extensive experience providing strategic advice to both public and private companies on a wide variety of legal and regulatory matters. Prior to joining Medcan, Jennifer served in leadership roles at a global and national retailer, after practicing for almost a decade at one of Canada’s leading law firms. 

She is a graduate of the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School and a member of the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association, the Ontario Bar Association and the Association of Corporate Counsel and has co-authored several articles.

Eric Swanger is the Chief Financial Officer at Medcan Health Management Inc. (Medcan). Eric is an accomplished senior executive with nearly 25 years of experience in financial management and strategic planning. He is a trusted business partner who has a track record of creating value, while working in the best interests of customers and stakeholders.  

Eric’s career has spanned a variety of sectors and public companies, including seven years of leadership roles at Barrick Gold Corporation. Most recently, Eric was the Vice President of Finance at Lifeworks Inc. and was part of the team that executed the sale of the company to TELUS Health in 2022.  

Eric earned his Certified Public Accountant designation with Deloitte and holds a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Accounting from the University of Southern California.

Ned Baker is the Vice President of Information Technology & Cyber Security at Medcan Health Management Inc. (Medcan). As a member of the leadership team, Ned oversees the company’s technology infrastructure, data security and digital transformation initiatives, while planning and setting IT strategies for Medcan’s success. Currently, he’s leading the IT Operations & Cyber Security team, responsible for system engineering, security, integration, cloud infrastructure, clinical applications, Servicedesk, and client service. He joined Medcan in 2003 as a Director of Information Technology and Cyber Security, and he was promoted to his current position in 2022.

Before Medcan, Ned worked in IT services and consulting where he gained competencies and experience in operations program management, software, infrastructure and security teams management, cloud and security solutions deployments.

He holds a Certified Project Manager Professional (PMP) designation, an MCSE Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, a B.Sc. degree in Computer Science, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Hull.

Mark De Paoli is the Vice President of Product Management at Medcan Health Management Inc. (Medcan). A natural problem solver with a strong background in strategy, consulting, and product development, Mark is pivotal in driving the company's product vision and delivering solutions that enhance the outcomes and experience of Medcan’s clients. Mark leads a team of skilled professionals who oversee the entire product lifecycle, from ideation and market research to product development, launch, and ongoing enhancements. He collaborates closely with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment and successful execution of the company's product roadmap.

Mark has a track record of working with new teams and functions in the private and non-profit sectors to drive growth, and in navigating stakeholder relationships and managing cross-functional teams to achieve results. Prior to joining Medcan, Mark served in leadership roles at Trillium Health Partners Foundation and in Deloitte’s Human Capital practice.  

He holds a master's degree in Business Administration from the Schulich School of Business at York University and a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from the Smith School of Business at Queen’s.

Laura Hearn is the Vice President of Marketing at Medcan Health Management Inc. (Medcan). Laura is critical in shaping the company’s marketing and communication strategies and driving its success in the highly competitive healthcare industry. She leads a talented team responsible for the execution of comprehensive marketing initiatives that drive brand awareness, customer acquisition, and engagement. Her focus is also on ensuring a unified and impactful marketing approach with the goal of helping Medcan achieve its ambitious growth objectives within campaign management, digital marketing, and marketing data analytics.

Before Medcan, Laura held senior leadership roles within large-scale organizations in various industries, including advertising services, telecommunications, philanthropic fundraising services, consulting and healthcare. 

With over 20 years of experience in marketing, she has built a reputation for her strategic thinking, creative approach, and ability to connect with customers with proven expertise in brand-building, marketing strategy execution, and signature event management. Laura’s deep understanding of healthcare consumer behaviour and market trends has been instrumental in developing impactful marketing campaigns that resonate with the target audience.

She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree (Honours) from Queen’s University School of Business.

Laurelle Hoogendoorn is the Vice President of Virtual Medcan at Medcan Health Management Inc. (Medcan). In this role, Laurelle is responsible for developing Virtual Medcan, leading cross-functional efforts to evolve how products and services are delivered virtually to improve the client experience and health outcomes, while supporting growth and expansion initiatives. In addition to Virtual Medcan, Laurelle spearheads the development of an e-commerce strategy, enhancing the online reach and presence of Medcan’s products and services.

A highly qualified digital marketing, sales, and operations professional, Laurelle has hands on experience developing a data-driven approach to identify strategic growth drivers for Medcan. She possesses a demonstrated history in guiding sales and marketing teams to increase revenue and establish streamlined processes. 

Prior to working at Medcan, Laurelle worked at Volkswagen Group Canada Inc. in brand and digital marketing, where she focused on developing marketing strategies to meet key performance indicators. 
Laurelle holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Redeemer University.

Nina Nguyen is the Vice President of Human Resources at Medcan Health Management Inc. (Medcan). As a member of the Executive Team, she is instrumental in promoting the company’s values and ensuring a strong corporate culture. She is also responsible for all Human Resources functions, including Talent Acquisition and Learning & Development. Nina leads a team of HR professionals responsible for employee engagement, as well as creating and implementing strategic people solutions that drive the organization’s success. She is also the Executive Sponsor of Medcan’s People Team, an internal committee that consists of employees from across the organization who are passionate and dedicated to driving engagement, promoting comradery, and building a strong sense of belonging and community.  

Before Medcan, Nina held senior leadership roles within large-scale organizations in various industries, including IT, banking, and financial services. With over 25 years of diversified experience in HR, she has developed a strong expertise in strategies and policies, performance management, employee relations, recruitment and selection, employee recognition, corporate communications, employee development and succession planning. 

She holds a Certified Human Resources Executive (CHRE) Designation from the Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA). Nina studied Psychology at the University of Toronto and Business Administration and Human Resources at George Brown College.

Stephen Warr is the Vice President of Growth at Medcan Health Management Inc. (Medcan). As the VP of Growth, Stephen leads our Growth team comprised of talented professionals responsible for growing both our corporate and private sales. He formulates and executes growth strategies, leveraging market intelligence and competitive analysis to identify new business opportunities that expand the company's customer base.

With over 18 years of experience in business development and global partnerships, Stephen has built a reputation for his strategic vision, market insights, and ability to execute successful growth initiatives. Before his role at Medcan, Stephen held leadership positions in both the fintech and telecom sectors, where he excelled in driving market expansion and revenue growth. 

He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) from Wilfrid Laurier University.

Sandra is the Vice President of Business Operations & Transformation at Medcan Health Management Inc. (Medcan). With a robust background in business analysis and global business and sales operations, 

Sandra is critical in driving operational excellence, fostering organizational efficiency, and leading transformative initiatives at Medcan. She leads a team of talented professionals responsible for managing the company's day-to-day operational functions, including medical records, referral coordination, client care, and sales operation and compliance groups. She seeks to identify areas for operational improvement with her team and implement innovative strategies that enhance the company's competitive position. 

Prior to her current role, Sandra worked in the commercial real estate, pharmaceutical, and software development industries for over 19 years. 

She is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) and holds a Bachelor of Commerce, specializing in Financial Accounting, from the University of Toronto.
