New advances in blood-based biomarker testing and treatments are changing the way Alzheimer’s disease is diagnosed and managed
On October 20, 2026, Medcan’s Dr. Scott Gledhill dropped by Breakfast Television to discuss the difference between dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, and why earlier detection is becoming increasingly important possible.
Traditionally, Alzheimer’s has been diagnosed through symptom assessment, cognitive testing, blood work, and brain imaging. While these tools remain important, they cannot always identify the exact biological cause of memory changes.
However, today, there are newer biomarker tests helping to make diagnosis more precise. In particular, blood tests that measure p-tau217, a biomarker associated with Alzheimer’s-related changes in the brain, offer a simpler and more accessible way to support diagnosis.
Treatment are evolving, too. In the interview, Dr. Gledhill touches on the latest drug therapies that can modestly slow disease progression in some people, rather than simply manage symptoms.
Watch Dr. Gledhill's segment on The latest advances in Alzheimer's research to learn about what emerging blood tests can and cannot tell us, and how new therapies are changing the outlook for some people living with the disease.
