When you finally get the menopause care you’ve been seeking after years of struggle

How Medcan’s integrated program helped one woman move from debilitating fatigue to strong, confident and better than before

For nearly two years, Jennifer knew something wasn’t right. She was living with persistent night sweats, intense fatigue, irritability, bloating, low mood and brain fog that wouldn’t lift.

The night sweats were the most disruptive, waking her repeatedly and leaving her exhausted the next day. “I wasn’t sleeping and that snowballed into everything else,” she said. “The fatigue was overwhelming.”

Despite regular visits to her family doctor, and multiple medication changes, her symptoms never fully resolved. At best, there was mild improvement, but it was usually short-lived and followed by a great deal of frustration. Eventually, it got to the point where Jennifer was genuinely worried that her symptoms were affecting her ability to perform in her role at work.

“I honestly thought I might not be able to keep up,” she says. “Mentally, I just wasn’t there.”

At her best, and before these symptoms of menopause, Jennifer was a high‑energy, physically active person. She trained regularly, went to the gym multiple times a week, and practiced yoga. She even participated in races and duathlons, and hiked to the basecamp of Mount Everest. But as her symptoms worsened, she felt like she no longer recognized herself.

“I was in mid-life but felt like I was 75 years old,” Jennifer recalled. “I had no energy, I was bloated, and it impacted my confidence.”

When she turned 50, she realized she couldn’t keep pushing through. She thought, Is this really what life is supposed to look like now? But still, she kept searching for answers.

Discovering a specialized, interdisciplinary approach to menopause care

Jennifer learned about Medcan’s Menopause & Perimenopause Program at a menopause conference in Toronto. After researching the program and speaking with the team, she decided to enroll. She was hopeful but unsure of what to expect.

From her very first appointment, the experience felt different. Jennifer met with Clinical Director, and Menopause Certified Specialist and Physician, Dr. Jennifer Zelovitzky, who took the time to do a comprehensive review of her symptoms, medical history and medications.

“She really listened,” Jennifer said. “She looked at everything I was taking and immediately recognized that it wasn’t the right approach for me.”

When Dr. Zelovitzky adjusted Jennifer’s hormone therapy to better support her body, the positive impacts she experienced were immediate. “After that first visit, my night sweats resolved,” Jennifer said. “I couldn’t believe it. After two years of struggling, they were gone.”

Her irritability eased as well, and for the first time in years, she began sleeping through the night. “It honestly felt like night and day.”

A personalized approach that treats the whole person

What truly set the program apart for Jennifer was its comprehensive, team‑based approach, and its six-month timeline where she was followed continually by a women’s health and menopause specializing physician, had 24/7nurse access, and a treatment plan that was regularly assessed.

Beyond physician care and menopause hormone therapy treatment, she met with a dietitian who reviewed her diet in detail. Like many women navigating menopause, Jennifer had been self-prescribing supplements, believing they were essential at this stage of life.

“I was spending over $100 (probably closer to $200) a month on supplements,” she said. “Omega‑3s, calcium, vitamins – you name it.”

Jennifer also worked with a Medcan osteopath who created a simple, personalized stretching program to help with the aches and pains she was experiencing. “Everything felt practical, personalized and doable.”

Rather than treating symptoms in isolation, the Medcan team looked at the full picture - hormones, nutrition, physical health, mental clarity and lifestyle. “It felt very holistic,” Jennifer explained. “They were looking at me as a whole person.”

Reclaiming her life and becoming a better version of herself

Within six to eight months, Jennifer felt like herself again, and in many ways, an even better version. She lost the weight she had gained. Her energy returned. She was back working out five days a week. “I feel like an even better version of myself,” Jennifer said.

The brain fog lifted, allowing her to focus clearly at work again. She also regained cognitive clarity back, which helped bring her confidence back too.

The impact extended beyond her health as well. Jennifer’s relationships improved, and she felt more present at home and at work because, as she explained, what she was experiencing before wasn’t just symptoms. They affected her relationships – with her husband and her child – “everyone and everything.”

Looking back, she describes the experience as life‑changing. “It really felt like it saved my life,” she says. “I wasn’t in a good place, and getting this level of care made all the difference.”

Medcan offered her what she couldn’t find elsewhere: coordinated, timely care from a knowledgeable, specialized team, all in one place.

She now openly encourages friends and colleagues to seek specialized support if they’re struggling and is a true advocate of Medcan’s program. At 51, Jennifer feels strong, energized, clear‑headed, and confident again. She learned this wasn’t just about treating symptoms, but about being fully supported by a care team that recognized her as a whole person.
